Tasmania
Tasmania
is the most southerly of the Australian states and is situated approximately
200kms south of Victoria. Tasmania is separated from the mainland by Bass
Strait.
The
island is 315kms wide at its widest point and 286kms long. It has a population
of 473,000 and the state capital, Hobart, has a population of 193,000.
The
state was first settled as a penal colony in 1803 and today many of the
major tourist attractions reflect that convict heritage. Over 20% of the
island is listed as as World Heritage Area and people come from all over
the world to trek through the unforgetable wilderness areas.
Tasmania is steeped in history ... and tragedy ... and it has a haunting beauty that remains with you long after you have left the island.
